Difficulty Settings

Final Fantasy Resonance has three difficulty settings, Casual, Normal and Expert, and you can switch between them at any time under Options, Gameplay. Expert makes enemies stronger but awards more MRP for leveling Visions, and no trophy or achievement depends on difficulty.

Final Fantasy Resonance has three difficulty settings, Casual, Normal and Expert, and you can change between them at any time: it is the first setting under Gameplay in the Options menu (Game8, Oct 16, 2026). Casual makes battles easier for players who are there for the story, Normal is the balanced default, and Expert makes enemies stronger in return for more MRP, the points that raise your Visions' Mastery Rank. KultZ, whose Complete Beginner's Guide opens on the demo's "Choose Your Difficulty" screen, personally recommends Expert for players who like to think about abilities, equipment and enemy actions, Normal for newcomers to these games, and the easier setting for anyone who mostly wants the plot, adding: "You can change the difficulty at any time, so don't feel obligated to play at a level you don't like."

The three settings

Setting The game's description (as Game8 reports it) What changes
Casual For a story-centric experience Easier battles
Normal For a balanced experience Standard battles
Expert For those who like a challenge Stronger enemies, more MRP

Source: Game8, Oct 16, 2026. Game8 adds that you choose a setting when you start a new game and may change it in the middle of a playthrough.

Game8's page does not say whether difficulty changes anything outside battle, and no guide we use lists Expert's exact enemy multipliers as of Oct 25, 2026. The PlayStation Store lists Adjustable Difficulty among the game's 12 accessibility features (PlayStation Store, read Oct 25, 2026), and Steam lists it among the game's features (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026).

How hard is Normal?

The developers set out to make Normal a real test. Square Enix told Automaton that Normal is pitched like Octopath Traveler's Normal, with an easier Casual setting for anyone who wants it (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026), and Wccftech, reporting the same interview, says Normal's bosses are meant to make you rethink your party (Wccftech, Jun 11, 2026).

Reviewers found the curve back-loaded. GamingTrend calls early combat undemanding and later fights challenging, with enemies that resist status effects and one boss that healed 88,888 HP two turns running (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026). DualShockers, on the other hand, says Normal can be won with basic attacks and recommends Expert, because it forces you to learn the stagger and Resonance systems (DualShockers, Oct 22, 2026). PowerPyx rates the whole trophy list 4 out of 10 for difficulty (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). How battles work is on Combat.

Which difficulty to pick

  • Casual if you want the story with fewer setbacks, or for long grinding sessions. Game8's EXP farm, the Chimera groups in the desert west of the Village of Kol at 300 to 390 EXP a fight, is run on Casual because the Chimeras hit hard (Game8, Oct 24, 2026), and Game8 notes that Casual carries no penalty for gil farming (Game8, Oct 23, 2026).
  • Normal if you are new to turn-based Final Fantasy, as KultZ suggests; it is the challenge the developers built the bosses around.
  • Expert if you want to master the systems, as KultZ and DualShockers recommend, or whenever you are earning MRP, since Expert awards more (Game8, Oct 24, 2026).

Because switching is free, you can mix them.

IGN's "9 Things Final Fantasy Resonance Doesn't Tell You" gives the best example: Magic Pots cannot hurt you and pay out a large amount of MRP when you hand over the item they want (usually an Ether), so IGN switches to Expert just before the encounter "to grab a free 1.5 times MRP boost". Where the pots are is on EXP, Gil and MRP Farming; why MRP matters is on Abilities, AP and Mastery Rank.

Trophies, achievements and the demo

No trophy or achievement depends on difficulty, and everything can be done on Casual (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026); the list is on Achievements and Trophies. The free demo already offered the choice, as KultZ's footage of its title screen shows, and its save carries over to the full game on the same platform (Demo and Save Transfer). There is no New Game Plus, so a second playthrough on a higher setting starts from scratch (Game8, Oct 24, 2026). First-hour advice is on the Beginner's Guide.
