Abilities, AP and Mastery Rank

In Final Fantasy Resonance a character learns abilities from the Vision they equip as its Mastery Rank rises from 0 to 9 with MRP from battles; learned abilities stay with that character and are equipped within an AP budget that grows with Mastery Rank, while Magicite awakens a Vision to three stars for stronger skills.

In Final Fantasy Resonance your characters learn abilities from the Visions they equip: each Vision's Mastery Rank (MR) rises from 0 to 9 with MRP earned in battle, every rank teaches an ability and adds permanent stats, and once learned an ability can be equipped without the Vision by spending AP, the character's ability budget (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026; Game8, Oct 20, 2026). IGN's "9 Things Final Fantasy Resonance Doesn't Tell You" sums it up: Visions "grant permanent status buffs and learnable skills as you master them", so you can teach the Warrior of Light's Physical Counter or Terra's Magic Boost to everyone, but the AP pool is limited and "the game doesn't make AP limits super clear". Separately, Magicite awakens a Vision to up to three stars (GameRant, Oct 20, 2026).

Roles

Every character has one permanent role, and IGN's combat guide lists all six with the party member who holds each:

Role Party members Job in battle
Sentinel Rain Defends, draws attacks, protects and buffs allies
Medic Fina Heals
Commando Lid, Jake, Sakura Deals damage
Synergist Nichol Buffs the party, including defense and stagger power
Breaker Lasswell Hits weaknesses and works the stagger gauge
Saboteur The eighth party member (a Chapter 5 spoiler) Debuffs enemies

Breaker takes the place of Final Fantasy 13's Ravager (Worthplaying, Oct 20, 2026). Visions have roles too, and a Vision of another role changes the character's mix: PSU's example is a Commando with a Medic Vision becoming a damage-dealing healer (PSU, Oct 20, 2026). The Outerhaven suggests pairing like with like (Breaker with a Breaker Vision) but says it is not required (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026). The Characters page covers each party member.

Mastery Rank and MRP

Mastery Rank belongs to a character and a Vision together: Cloud at MR 9 on Rain is still MR 0 on Lasswell (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). KultZ's Complete Beginner's Guide shows where to check it: in Equipment and Abilities, pick a character and open the Visions list, where "MR" and a number sit beside each Vision; the current Vision's rank also shows under the character's HP and MP, and "Next Rank" says how much MRP is left. Character levels use EXP; Mastery Rank uses MRP. KultZ notes that the demo capped characters at level 15 and Visions at MR 5.

Each rank teaches an ability or a passive and gives permanent stat boosts, which stay after the Vision is removed (Game8, Oct 21, 2026); Game Informer compares the stat gains to Final Fantasy 6's Espers and the skill transfer to Final Fantasy 5's jobs (Game Informer, Oct 20, 2026). A few ranks matter more than the rest:

Vision Rank What it teaches
Cloud MR 5 Deathblow, a critical-hit battle skill
Firion MR 9 Arms Akimbo: two actions a turn
Squall MR 9 Double Action
Terra MR 9 Break the Limit: damage cap 99,999 instead of 9,999
Vaan MR 9 Double Gil
Warrior of Light By MR 5 Physical Counter

Sources: IGN, Oct 21, 2026 (Cloud); DualShockers, Oct 23, 2026 (Firion, Squall); GameRant, Oct 24, 2026 (Terra); Game8, Oct 23, 2026 (Vaan); Game8, Oct 24, 2026 (Warrior of Light).

MR costs rise steeply and later enemies give more MRP, so DualShockers advises swapping Visions early to collect their cheap passives (DualShockers, Oct 22, 2026). Ways to earn more MRP:

  • End a battle on a staggered enemy for the Stagger Finish bonus (Game8, Oct 21, 2026).
  • Play on Expert, which awards more MRP (Game8, Oct 16, 2026); see Difficulty Settings.
  • Equip the Digital Deluxe Edition's Mastery Ring, which raises MRP from battle (Steam, Jun 9, 2026).
  • Use Victoria, whose mastery bonuses include MRP Gain +50% (DualShockers, Oct 23, 2026).
  • Give Magic Pots the item they ask for, usually an Ether, for a large MRP payout (GameRant, Oct 22, 2026).

Farming spots are on EXP, Gil and MRP Farming.

Davidvinc RPGs recommends never leaving a Vision unmastered: take every Vision to rank 1 or 2 on every character, since those ranks cost almost nothing, and keep rotating. His examples are the first-rank passives that refill MP: Tronn restores 5% of maximum MP when the character staggers an enemy, Cloud 3% on a critical hit and the Warrior of Light 10% on a stagger. PowerPyx makes the same point for the Vision Connoisseur achievement (8 Visions at max MR): rotate each Vision once it reaches MR 9 (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). On Steam 19.7% of players had maxed one Vision and 6.2% had maxed eight (Steam, Oct 25, 2026).

Abilities and AP

An ability learned on a character stays with that character after the Vision is unequipped, as long as it fits within their ability cost limit (Game8, Oct 24, 2026). That limit is AP, and raising a Vision's Mastery Rank raises the character's AP (Game8, Oct 20, 2026). KultZ's advice is to match abilities to what the character really does, since an effect that restores MP on a stagger only pays off on someone who staggers constantly, and to check the equipped list each time something new is learned, because it is easy to unlock an ability and forget to equip it. Mastering a Vision fully unlocks its "Soul", which lowers the AP cost of its skills (Worthplaying, Oct 20, 2026).

Carried-over abilities are where builds come from. Square Enix's own examples were Dualcast and Spellblade Dual Wield, presented as an accessible evolution of the job system (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026); Worthplaying put Shantotto's Dualcast on Terra for a double Ultima. Combinations are on Best Visions and Best Party and Builds.

Abilities are physical or magical, and elemental ones can be either. IGN's combat guide shows how to check before you build: in Equipment and Abilities, move to the Visions list and press Square (or your platform's equivalent) for a summary of each Vision's attacks; a physical Vision on a magic attacker, or the reverse, is a reason to swap.

Magicite and awakening

Awakening is separate from Mastery Rank: you spend Magicite at a Moogle of Light, found in towns and on the airship, to give a Vision stars that unlock upgraded skills, and the stars are shared by every character who uses that Vision (GameRant, Oct 20, 2026). As KultZ puts it, awakening improves the Vision, while mastery is each character's progress with it; his footage shows the Moogle of Light in Grandport and the Vision Enhancement screen.

Star Costs
1 Magicite Shard
2 Magicite
3 Magicite Cryst (first found in Chapter 5)

Source: PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026.

Magicite is limited: it comes from dungeon chests and powerful monsters (RPG Site, Aug 24, 2026), above all the 15 Cave Masters, each dropping Magicite scaled to its level (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026), plus Colosseum prizes and the Tablet Shard rewards. PowerPyx says there is enough to take every Vision to three stars. Game8's order: Leah first (Cura at one star, Curaga at two), then Cloud (Cross-Slash and a big critical boost against staggered enemies at two stars), the Warrior of Light and Terra only to one star (Game8, Oct 22, 2026). Terra at full awakening gains Ribbon (DualShockers, Oct 23, 2026). The achievement Awakened Light (one Vision fully awakened) was held by 3.8% of Steam players (Steam, Oct 25, 2026).

Equipment

Each character equips a weapon, a body armor and two accessories; Game8's tank build for Rain is the Flamberge, a Surcoat, a Vitality Charm and a Bulletproof Vest (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). Weapons come as greatswords, katanas, bows, hammers, grimoires, whips, guns and rods, and armor as light, heavy or robes (Game8, Oct 24, 2026). The best weapons are Aileen's forged ones and the twelve Legendary Arms: see Crafting and Adamantite and Chamber of Arms.

The Steam store's screenshot of the Equipment and Abilities screen shows how it reads: Fina, a level 40 Medic with Y'shtola equipped, with her stats on the left, her gear, her equipped abilities with their AP costs, and the abilities two other Visions, Bartz and Zidane, can teach her.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mastery Rank in Final Fantasy Resonance? Mastery Rank (MR) is how far a character has mastered a Vision, from 0 to 9. It rises with MRP from battles, teaches an ability or passive at each rank and is tracked separately for every character and Vision pair.

What is AP in Final Fantasy Resonance? AP is a character's budget for equipped abilities in Final Fantasy Resonance. Every learned ability has an AP cost, and raising Visions' Mastery Ranks raises the character's AP.

Do you keep abilities after unequipping a Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance? Yes. An ability a character has learned from a Vision stays with that character and can be equipped without the Vision, within their AP limit.

How do you get more MRP in Final Fantasy Resonance? End battles on a staggered enemy for the Stagger Finish bonus, play on Expert, equip the Mastery Ring or Victoria's MRP Gain passive, and trade Magic Pots the item they ask for. In Resonance later enemies also give more MRP than early ones.

How do you awaken Visions in Final Fantasy Resonance? Take Magicite to a Moogle of Light in a town or on the airship. A Magicite Shard gives the first star, Magicite the second and a Magicite Cryst the third (PowerPyx).

What are the roles in Final Fantasy Resonance? Final Fantasy Resonance has six roles: Sentinel, Breaker, Medic, Commando, Synergist and Saboteur. Each party member has one fixed role, and their Vision's role adds to it.
