Combat

Final Fantasy Resonance uses classic turn-based battles with a turn timeline: hit an enemy's weaknesses to empty its stagger gauge, which cancels its turn and gives the attacker a Bonus Phase, and stagger every enemy at once for a Sweeping Stagger, an extra action for the whole party and a Vision's Resonance attack.

Final Fantasy Resonance fights in strict turns: four party members and their enemies act in the order shown on a timeline at the top of the screen, and the core of every battle is emptying an enemy's stagger gauge with its weaknesses, which skips its turn and gives your attacker an extra action (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). There is no Active Time Battle (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026). The Official Gameplay Trailer titles it the "Turn-based Battle System" and shows Rain, Lasswell, Fina and Lid with their Visions hitting a demon with skills whose names appear in banners, ending in a wind attack that sweeps the screen.

A row of portraits across the top shows the turn order, a menu at right lists Attack, Defend, Items and Escape, and bars at the bottom give HP and MP for Rain (2088), Lasswell (1838), Fina (1483) and Lid (1602).

Turn order

Each character's sprite sits in a diamond on the bar at the top of the screen and moves along it from left to right; IGN's combat guide explains that your Speed stat decides the order, and in some cases your equipped skills. Faster characters act first, and staggering an enemy before its turn comes cancels that action (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). That makes the order of your attacks a decision: IGN advises breaking the fastest threat first rather than "wasting a stagger on an enemy that acts last".

Up to four characters fight at once; bench members get nothing from the battle itself, but the whole party levels together (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026). Each character has a fixed role (Sentinel, Medic, Commando, Synergist, Breaker or Saboteur) and chooses each turn whether to act as themselves or through their Vision (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026); roles and abilities are on Abilities, AP and Mastery Rank.

Battles run at three speeds, shown by triangles at the bottom left (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026): normal, 1.5x and 2.0x, as Square Enix described them to Automaton (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026). IGN's "9 Things Final Fantasy Resonance Doesn't Tell You" points out that the speed button (Triangle on PlayStation) works on the battle screen, and that some Resonances reset it, so you tap it again afterward.

Weakness and stagger

Every enemy has two bars: red health and, beneath it, a yellow stagger gauge. Every hit lowers the stagger gauge, and hits to the enemy's elemental weaknesses lower it faster; in the skill menu each move shows a red bar for its damage and a yellow bar for its stagger power, as IGN's guide shows. When the gauge breaks, the enemy is staggered: it loses its turn and its defense drops (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). Enemies of a higher level than your party take less stagger damage (Game8, Oct 21, 2026), and attacks built for staggering are marked with a bullet symbol (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026).

Producer Keisuke Nakashima's own advice is the same: "Even the toughest foes have a weakness. Experiment with attack types to find them." Libra shows an enemy's weaknesses and resistances, and discovered weaknesses stay marked (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026); Leah and Cloud teach it early (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). Watch for elements an enemy absorbs, and remember that many enemies resist or ignore status effects (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026).

Staggered enemies take more damage, so IGN suggests saving your strongest hits and buffs for that moment. One trap: counterattacks from Vision abilities count toward the gauge, and a stagger that lands after the enemy has already acted that turn is wasted.

Bonus Phase

The character who staggers an enemy gets one extra action at the end of the turn, the Bonus Phase (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). In IGN's early boss footage the words "BONUS PHASE" sweep across the screen after the party breaks the boss. In Japanese the systems are called Break and Extra Phase (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026).

Sweeping Stagger and Resonances

Stagger every enemy on the field in one turn and you get a Sweeping Stagger: every party member gets an extra action in the bonus phase, and the phase ends with a Resonance (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). The Official Gameplay Trailer shows the words "SWEEPING STAGGER" bursting across a fight with Rain, Lasswell, Lid and Sakura.

A battle screen filled with radiating light and confetti and the large words SWEEPING STAGGER. Two enemy health bars read STAGGERED, and the party bars at the bottom name Rain, Lasswell, Nichol and Jake with their HP and MP.

A Resonance is a Vision's signature attack, played as a 3D CG scene. Once everyone has acted, you pick one from the Visions your party has equipped, or decline (Game8, Oct 23, 2026); IGN's boss footage shows the "Select Resonance" wheel with each Vision's Resonance on a point of a diamond. You get one Resonance per Sweeping Stagger (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). They range from single-target strikes such as Cloud's Ascension to party heals such as Leah's Healing Wind; all 26 are listed on Best Visions. The scenes can be skipped one at a time but not turned off (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026), and the legacy heroes speak only Japanese in them (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026).

To set one up, Game8 suggests Multicast when every enemy's gauge is low: it makes Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Cure hit all targets at reduced power (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). High-level play chains carried-over abilities, follow-ups and Resonances into one turn that GameSpot timed at about five minutes (GameSpot, Oct 23, 2026). The achievements Keep Them on Their Toes (1,000 staggers) and Resonance Rapid Fire (400 Resonances) count both; on Steam 1.0% and 0.1% of players had them (Steam, Oct 25, 2026).

Damage is capped at 9,999 until Terra's Break the Limit, learned at Mastery Rank 9, raises it to 99,999 (GameRant, Oct 24, 2026).

Limit Bursts

"What is a Final Fantasy game without a Limit Burst?", Nakashima asks in his gameplay tips, adding that the team "wanted to push for a cinematic appeal" with dynamic camera work. The Limit Burst gauge is the purple bar under MP: it fills fastest when a character staggers an enemy and slowly when they take damage, and Tronn's and Cloud's skills also fill it (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). Some Limit Bursts deal heavy damage and others boost the party (RPG Site, Aug 24, 2026).

In IGN's boss footage Rain shouts "Infinity Drive!", his one-bar Limit Burst, a single Fire hit that does 50% more to a staggered target (Game8, Oct 25, 2026).

Spoilers for Chapter 5 follow: the table names the eighth party member.

Character One bar Two bars
Rain Infinity Drive: Fire to one enemy, +50% if staggered Crimson Onslaught: Fire to all enemies
Lasswell Null Moon: one enemy, easier to stagger for 3 turns
Fina Holy Ray: Light to all enemies, scales with Sanctity Radiant Restoration: revives all fallen allies
Lid March of the Machines: all enemies, may Confuse Enterprise Airstrike: all enemies
Nichol Formation: Steeled Advance: fills allies' gauges as they act Mirroring Prism: each member acts twice
Jake T.R.N.D.: Wind, high critical rate Glücksschmied: scales with Luck, which resets
Sakura Eternal Veil: party barrier that blocks one hit Sakura's Ultima: non-elemental magic to all
Archwitch Fina Chaotic Convergence; Fel Meteor (all enemies) Abyss Graviton

Source: Game8, read Oct 25, 2026. Archwitch Fina's are all Dark; Fel Meteor comes with the Digital Deluxe Edition's Archwitch's Grimoire (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).

Enemies have Limit Bursts too. A boss glowing red on the timeline is about to use one: stagger it first, or Defend (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026).

Espers in battle

Fina, and later the eighth party member, can summon an Esper (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). It costs 50 MP, fights for three turns and leaves with a finishing attack (Game8, Oct 21, 2026), and only one can be out at a time, which DualShockers says makes running both Finas redundant (DualShockers, Oct 24, 2026). All nine and where to find them are on Espers.

Defend, items and escape

Defend is more than a block: IGN's guide uses it to pass a turn when you need to shift the timeline and line up a stagger before an enemy acts again, and to break an enemy "twice instead of just once" by timing the end of a turn. Items behave as in older Final Fantasy games: healing items hurt undead enemies, a Phoenix Down kills them outright, and elemental scrolls deal elemental damage when you lack the spell or the MP (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). Game8's advice on Escape is to use it when enemies are too strong and come back later.

Battle results add bonuses for how you won: No Damage gives more EXP, Overkill more gil and a Stagger Finish more MRP (Game8, Oct 21, 2026). Farming them is on EXP, Gil and MRP Farming.

Random encounters

Battles start at random. The minimap's radar shifts from green to yellow to red as one nears, standing still does not lower the rate, and rates differ by dungeon (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026), with fewer in dungeons that have puzzles (Wccftech, Jun 11, 2026). IGN notes that sprinting brings more encounters. Worthplaying reports that encounters cannot be switched off until late, after beating a level 95 enemy (Worthplaying, Oct 20, 2026). How hard battles hit depends on Difficulty Settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Final Fantasy Resonance turn-based? Yes. Final Fantasy Resonance uses strict turn-based combat with a turn timeline at the top of the screen and no Active Time Battle.

How does stagger work in Final Fantasy Resonance? Each enemy has a yellow stagger gauge under its HP that every hit lowers, faster with its weaknesses. When it breaks, the enemy loses its turn, its defense drops and the character who broke it gets a Bonus Phase action.

What is a Sweeping Stagger in Final Fantasy Resonance? A Sweeping Stagger happens when you stagger every enemy in the same turn. Each party member gets an extra action, and then you choose one equipped Vision's Resonance attack.

How do you use a Resonance in Final Fantasy Resonance? A Resonance is only offered after a Sweeping Stagger, once every party member has taken their extra action. You pick it from the Select Resonance wheel, which shows the Resonances of the Visions your party has equipped.

How do you fill the Limit Burst gauge in Final Fantasy Resonance? The purple Limit Burst gauge under MP fills fastest when a character staggers an enemy and slowly when they take damage. Some Limit Bursts use one bar and stronger ones use two.

Can you turn off random encounters in Final Fantasy Resonance? Not early on. According to Worthplaying, Resonance only lets you disable encounters late in the game, after you beat a level 95 enemy.

Can you speed up battles in Final Fantasy Resonance? Yes. Resonance has three battle speeds, switched with a button on the battle screen, and Resonance scenes can be skipped one at a time.
