Reviews and Reception
Final Fantasy Resonance reviewed well: a Top Critic Average of 85 on OpenCritic with 89% of critics recommending it, Metacritic scores from 82 (Switch 2) to 86 (PlayStation 5 and Xbox), 36/40 from Famitsu, and 97% positive Steam user reviews. Critics praised the turn-based combat, the Visions, the HD-2D art and the music, and faulted the dialogue and a predictable story.
Final Fantasy Resonance was well received; Nintendo Life's Switch 2 review calls the idea that it is a re-tooled mobile game "a massive oversimplification" and the result "a completely new, true blue, classic Final Fantasy". OpenCritic gives it a Top Critic Average of 85, with 89% of critics recommending it, from 85 reviews, and the rating "Mighty" (OpenCritic, checked Oct 24, 2026). Metacritic averages run from 82 on Nintendo Switch 2 to 86 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (Metacritic, checked Oct 24, 2026), Famitsu's four reviewers gave it 36 out of 40 (GAMES.GG, Oct 15, 2026), and 97% of 1,639 Steam user reviews are positive (Steam, Oct 25, 2026). The review embargo lifted on Oct 20, 2026, two days before launch, so most reviews carry that date (OpenCritic). Critics agreed on the strengths: the turn-based Combat, the Visions, the HD-2D presentation and the music. They split over the story and its dialogue, from Game Informer's 9 to Eurogamer's and VGC's 3 out of 5.

What critics praised
The rebuild itself won praise. IGN's Michael Higham calls packaging Brave Exvius's story as a traditional RPG, with "no gacha mechanics, no microtransactions", "a brilliant way to bring existing stories into a format I'm a lot more inclined to play", and lists what came with it: an overworld with towns for each region, random encounters, an airship and full voice acting in the main story (Brave Exvius Connection). GameSpot's headline says the game "Saves A Great Story From Live-Service Oblivion" (GameSpot, Oct 20, 2026), and Siliconera's reviewer, who played for about 90 hours, titled the review "I didn't want Final Fantasy Resonance to end" (Siliconera, Oct 20, 2026).
The combat was the most praised part. Higham describes "a straightforward turn order along a timeline" rather than an ATB system, built on elemental weaknesses and stagger, with Visions that work "somewhat like a job system directly inspired by Final Fantasy V". Push Square's headline says the series "Returns to Its Roots to Fantastic Effect" (Push Square, Oct 20, 2026), and Nintendo Life's that it "Plays Like A Lost Entry From Earlier In The Series" (Nintendo Life, Oct 20, 2026). Even Kotaku, mixed to negative on the story and cast, liked the HD-2D art and the Visions (Kotaku, Oct 20, 2026).
The music came up again and again. IGN singles out town themes that evoke "a brutal industrialized empire or a mystical city floating in the sky", and realizes that "Brave Exvius's great soundtrack was here all along", down to a boss theme that mixes piano jazz with orchestral metal and a Latin choir. Nintendo Life's round-up of the reviews lists combat, Visions, HD-2D and music as the common praise (Nintendo Life, Oct 2026).
What critics faulted
The story's telling was the main complaint. Higham found "long stretches of its storytelling to be quite underwhelming", with dialogue that "feels like it was written for a middling young adult novel", though he came around on Rain and Lasswell and singles out Nichol's arc as a highlight. RPG Site, scoring 8, found the game "solid to great in nearly every way" but says the story loses momentum in its final third (RPG Site, Oct 20, 2026); Shacknews criticizes a late, unpopular turn in the story (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026). VGC's 3 out of 5 review is titled "A nostalgic JRPG limited by its mobile origins" (VGC, Oct 20, 2026).
Some found the challenge uneven. IGN "cruised through about the first half" because most enemies and bosses were pushovers, before the late game hit harder; GamingTrend also found early combat undemanding and later fights challenging (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026). Difficulty Settings covers Expert, the setting for players who want more. Smaller complaints: the Visions' 3D cutscenes are voiced only in Japanese (Shacknews), random encounters cannot be switched off until late (Worthplaying, Oct 20, 2026), and there are no options to scale the interface or text (Pocket Tactics, Oct 20, 2026).
Players and sales
On Steam, 97% of 1,639 user reviews are positive, which the store labels "Overwhelmingly Positive" (Steam, Oct 25, 2026). SteamDB counted a launch-day peak of 27,933 players at once, GamesRadar reports: above Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined's 27,390 and below the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake's 45,357, which makes it the second-biggest Steam launch of any Square Enix turn-based RPG (GamesRadar+, Oct 23, 2026). The count kept rising over the first weekend: Steam reported 30,014 players at once on Oct 25, 2026 (Steam Web API). Three days in, 0.2% of Steam players had finished the story, the share holding the Chapter 8 achievement (Steam Web API, read Oct 25, 2026; Achievements and Trophies).
Square Enix has announced no sales figures as of Oct 25, 2026, and Famitsu's Japanese sales chart for launch week was not yet out. Metacritic's PlayStation 5 user score stood at 9.0 from 84 ratings (Metacritic, checked Oct 24, 2026).

CombatFinal Fantasy Resonance uses classic turn-based battles with a turn timeline: hit an enemy's weaknesses to empty its stagger gauge, which cancels its turn and gives the attacker a Bonus Phase, and stagger every enemy at once for a Sweeping Stagger, an extra action for the whole party and a Vision's Resonance attack. -
VisionsFinal Fantasy Resonance has 26 Visions, crystallized heroes that each party member equips one at a time for stats, abilities and a Resonance attack. 17 are heroes from earlier Final Fantasy games, from the Warrior of Light to Clive, and 9 are originals; all 26 come from Chapters 1 to 7 and none can be missed. -
Music and SoundtrackFinal Fantasy Resonance's music is composed and arranged by Elements Garden, the group led by Noriyasu Agematsu, who scored Final Fantasy Brave Exvius; the game adds 33 new tracks to Brave Exvius's music, the Original Soundtrack is a 4-CD set of 120 tracks out Oct 28, 2026, and the image song is "INSIDE" by WurtS.

Platform DifferencesFinal Fantasy Resonance runs at 60 frames per second on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and at 30 on the original Switch, which also has the lowest resolution and the longest loads. Switch and Switch 2 are separate purchases with no upgrade path and no save transfer; PlayStation 5 and Switch have physical copies, Switch 2 a Game-Key Card. -
Brave Exvius ConnectionFinal Fantasy Resonance retells the first season of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (2015 to 2025), rebuilt for consoles with a rewritten script, a world map, no gacha and 26 Visions as fixed companions; it is a reimagining rather than a port, and you do not need to have played Brave Exvius.

Difficulty SettingsFinal Fantasy Resonance has three difficulty settings, Casual, Normal and Expert, and you can switch between them at any time under Options, Gameplay. Expert makes enemies stronger but awards more MRP for leveling Visions, and no trophy or achievement depends on difficulty.
