Development

Final Fantasy Resonance was developed by Square Enix with Lancarse, produced by Keisuke Nakashima and directed by Hiroto Furuya; Nakashima pitched it at the end of 2020, it was announced at the Jun 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct as the first HD-2D Final Fantasy, and it launched on Oct 22, 2026 with no DLC or sequel planned.

Final Fantasy Resonance was developed by Square Enix with the studio Lancarse, which the Steam store lists as co-developer (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026), and is "the very first HD-2D Final Fantasy game", as producer Keisuke Nakashima introduced it the day after its reveal. Nakashima, who had worked on the mobile Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, pitched a console version of its first season at the end of 2020; Hiroto Furuya directed it. Square Enix announced it at the Nintendo Direct of Jun 9, 2026 and released it four and a half months later, on Oct 22, 2026, on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (RPG Site, Jun 9, 2026).

Who made it

The Steam store names two developers, Square Enix and Lancarse ("LANCARSE Ltd."), with Square Enix as publisher; no interview has described exactly which parts Lancarse built, as of Oct 25, 2026. Within Square Enix, Nakashima told Kotaku "we're part of Team Asano", the group behind Octopath Traveler and the HD-2D games (Kotaku, Sep 4, 2026), and GamesRadar's review credits Square Enix Creative Studio 5 with Lancarse (GamesRadar+, Oct 20, 2026). Automaton reports that the staff included veterans of Octopath Traveler and the HD-2D Dragon Quest remakes (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026).

  • Keisuke Nakashima, producer, was an assistant producer on the overseas version of Brave Exvius (Game*Spark, Jun 10, 2026) and oversaw the Actraiser remake; his first Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy 5 (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026; Gamereactor, Jun 16, 2026). Inven spells his name Nakajima.
  • Hiroto Furuya, director, previously directed Another Eden (Inven Global). "Many of us creators who grew up playing turn-based games are now making our own video games", he told IGN (via Gamereactor).
  • Takashi Shiraga, combat director, and Masahiro Saito, art director, spoke to Automaton with them the day after the announcement; Game*Spark's Japanese staff list writes the combat director's name in a form that reads Tsuyoshi Shirakami.
  • Yukinori Kitajima, who wrote Brave Exvius, rewrote its script for Resonance (Brave Exvius Connection).
  • Elements Garden and Noriyasu Agematsu made the music (Music and Soundtrack), and Yoshitaka Amano drew the logo illustration (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026).

From Brave Exvius to a console game

Plans for an HD-2D Final Fantasy go back six or seven years and took shape around 2019, and the console idea came from Brave Exvius players asking for a console version (Gamereactor, Jun 16, 2026, relaying IGN). Nakashima submitted the first proposal at the end of 2020, thinking it "would be a shame for such a wonderful game to become unplayable via mobile"; after one to two years of concept research, core development itself was much shorter (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026). Planning started before Square Enix decided to end Brave Exvius's service (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026).

It was not the cheap job a port might seem. Nakashima told Kotaku that remaking it "requires as much work, time, and budget as creating a new title" (Kotaku, Sep 4, 2026): the scenario was rewritten, every side quest is new, a world map was added, the Visions' abilities were redesigned from scratch and the gacha removed. What changed in detail is on Brave Exvius Connection.

Designing the first HD-2D Final Fantasy

The Pixel Trailer opens on the question that guided the project: "What if Final Fantasy... had continued to push the limits of pixel art?" Japanese coverage gives the same concept, what Final Fantasy would look like had it kept evolving in pixel art (4Gamer, Sep 17, 2026), and Game*Spark's staff interview frames it as a "what if" of the series after Final Fantasy 6 (Game*Spark, Jun 10, 2026).

  • Cinematic Pixel. Square Enix's name for the technique renders 3D models as pixel art with dynamic camera work (4Gamer, Jun 10, 2026). Unlike Octopath Traveler's mostly fixed view, the camera moves; voxel-style 3D sprites were tried before the team settled on HD-2D (One More Game, Sep 4, 2026).
  • Taller characters. The sprites have taller proportions than earlier HD-2D games, and the Black Mage and White Mage were treated as key visuals (Game*Spark, Jun 10, 2026).
  • New 3D worlds. The 3D backgrounds were built from scratch; some Brave Exvius pixel art was reused and some characters redrawn (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026).
  • 3D CG for the big moments. Summons and Resonance attacks use 3D CG instead of pixels, because a pixel Cloud did not look right (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026).

In his first video Nakashima says "HD-2D really brings out the new side to beloved FF hallmarks like airships, espers, and of course, chocobos", and that the game returns to "the strategic combat style with some modern additions": cinematic cutscenes, "dynamic camera movements" and other additions that "really brings battles to life".

The Launch Trailer shows the result side by side: pixel-art battles, then rendered CG figures, an ice-wreathed woman, a horned dragon, Cloud swinging his sword and a sea serpent coiling through the clouds, before the logo bursts into flame.

The combat was built around the same idea. "What is a Final Fantasy game without a Limit Burst?", Nakashima asks in his gameplay tips video: "The Limit Burst looks spectacular with dynamic camera work. We really wanted to push for a cinematic appeal during these moments." The battle system itself is on Combat.

Choosing the Visions

Brave Exvius had over 2,000 characters; Resonance keeps 26, mostly protagonists of the main series plus a few secondary characters (Kotaku, Sep 4, 2026). Nakashima said the team weighed popularity votes from players in Japan and abroad with story depth and game balance (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026), and the teams behind the original games supervised their heroes (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026). Brave Exvius's Ariana Grande units were left out as a poor fit for the tone (Kotaku, Sep 3, 2026). At each Sanctum the Vision's quiz rewards answers that match the hero's own choices, but Furuya wanted "a flat playing field" so that fans gain no big advantage (Kotaku). See Visions.

Announcement and marketing

The Announce Trailer, shown at the Nintendo Direct of Jun 9, 2026, opens on the words "The first Final Fantasy in HD-2D" over four crystals, and its narrator promises that "Final Fantasy returns to its roots with cinematic pixel art in a classic tale of crystals with a new twist" (Game Informer, Jun 9, 2026). Steam pre-purchases opened the same day.

IGN played it during a visit to Square Enix and posted two boss fights on Jun 12, 2026: "It's the first HD-2D Final Fantasy game and brings the series back to turn-based combat while adapting the story of Brave Exvius for a traditional console style RPG", its video begins, before two boss fights. Sony's State of Play on Sep 3, 2026 brought the free demo, covering the prologue and Chapter 1, and the news that Sephiroth appears (Game Informer, Sep 3, 2026; Demo and Save Transfer). At PAX West in early September Nakashima and Furuya gave a round of interviews, and Nakashima said: "we truly feel this demo will dispel any kinds of uncertainty or concerns" (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026).

Launch and after

On release day Nakashima thanked players in a video message: "every decision we made was guided by our love for the world, characters, and the legacy that inspired this adventure", and seeing players' reactions had "resonated with us as fans ourselves". He calls it "a story about the connection that shape us, the allies and friends who stand beside us".

Square Enix has said there is nothing more to come. Kotaku was told there are no plans for DLC or additional content because the team wanted the base game complete at launch (Kotaku, Sep 4, 2026); Nakashima said there are "currently no plans for additional Visions" (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026) and that the team is not developing a second game covering Brave Exvius's Season 2 (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026). The only paid add-on is the $14.99 Digital Deluxe Upgrade (Release Date, Price and Editions).

Square Enix's launch post on Steam listed two known issues: the minimap and help display can reappear after being hidden, and some CPU configurations produce audio noise (Steam, Oct 22, 2026). No patch notes had been published on Steam or Square Enix's site as of Oct 24, 2026, and Square Enix has announced no sales figures. How it was received is on Reviews and Reception.
