Sephiroth

Sephiroth is an optional boss and Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance, fought in Whirlpool Hollow northeast of the Village of Kol once you have the airship in Chapter 5. He is listed at level 45 with 250,000 HP in three phases, but guides suggest level 60 or more; beating him gives the Sephiroth Vision and a Magicite Cryst.

Sephiroth is Final Fantasy Resonance's toughest optional Vision fight: you find him in Whirlpool Hollow, a whirlpool northeast of the Village of Kol that you enter from the airship in Chapter 5, and beating him earns his Vision (GameRant, Oct 24, 2026). Square Enix revealed him in the Official Gameplay Trailer at Sony's State of Play on Sep 3, 2026, the day the demo came out (Game Informer, Sep 3, 2026), and its press release said players can "find and challenge" him for a special reward (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026). The trailer shows him in battle against the party and alone as a sprite on a white field.

Spoilers: none for the story. Sephiroth is a cameo Vision, not part of the plot.

Where to find Sephiroth

Sephiroth cannot be reached until Chapter 5, when you get the airship. IGN's guide says to fly the airship straight into the gigantic whirlpool above Grandshelt; you come out the other end and walk into his Vision cave. GameRant puts the whirlpool "just north-east of the Village of Kol": hover over it (you cannot land) and the entrance appears. PowerPyx counts him among the airship-gated Chapter 5 Visions with a recommended level of 45. RPG Site covers him with Chapter 8's optional content, a sensible time to try. The Chocobo and Airship page explains flying.

He is not in the demo, which ends with Chapter 1. GamerFuzion's demo guide corrected its own earlier claim on this point and repeats Square Enix's line that you find and challenge him in the full game for a special reward.

Inside, a crystal speaks of "a reliquary for the memories of heroes" in CGInferno's footage, and after the opening dialogue you are asked whether to challenge him (GameRant). Say yes only when you are ready.

Before the fight

Sephiroth is level 45, and IGN says not to try before you are at least that. GameRant says to be "much higher", likely 60 or more, and PowerPyx calls this fight harder than Ultima Weapon (PowerPyx). What to prepare:

  • Break the Limit. Terra at Mastery Rank 9 raises the damage cap from 9,999 to 99,999; give it to your damage dealers (GameRant). See Abilities, AP and Mastery Rank.
  • A weakness of your own. Lid's Mechamog Scan adds one (below).
  • Reraise and barriers. Put Reraise on everyone early, and keep Sakura's one-bar Limit Burst Eternal Veil ready, a barrier that nullifies the next hit (IGN; RPG Site).
  • Slow. IGN notes he is not resistant to being slowed, which pushes back his attacks.

Sephiroth starts with no elemental weakness. Lid's Mechamog Scan, from her final Mechabo upgrade, adds one that lasts the whole fight; recast it to reroll a weakness your party can hit (IGN; GameRant). That makes Lid close to essential.

Source Party it suggests
IGN Lid with Cloud (Mechamog Scan, crit damage), Nichol with Leah (buffs, healing, revives), Lasswell with Bartz (elemental coverage), Sakura (magic damage, Eternal Veil)
GameRant Rain tanking with Multi-Cover and The Power Within, Fina as full healer (Holy in phase 3), Lid on Mechamog Scan, Sakura as the attacker

How to beat Sephiroth

Phase 1: Masamune in Waiting. The guides differ here. IGN says his magic defense is extremely high in this phase, so physical, high-crit attacks do the work, except while his blue sword icon is up: that buff lets him block and parry every physical attack for a turn, so spend it on buffs and protection such as Cloud's Mirage. GameRant reads the same phase as parrying physical attacks and recommends elemental attacks instead, with the weakness from Mechamog Scan. RPG Site adds that he counters attacks while the buff is active. Either way, do not swing into the buff, and do not let his turns bunch up, or he acts twice and can wipe the party (IGN).

Phase 2: One-Winged Angel. At about 80% (GameRant: 200,000 of 250,000 HP) he turns invincible until his next turn, then transforms. He gains a new element he absorbs, resists the rest, and resets his stagger gauge; he now counters non-elemental attacks hard, so use only elemental ones, Libra each time his element changes, and recast Mechamog Scan if needed (IGN; GameRant). He periodically drops the whole party to 1 HP: have Reraise and Eternal Veil in place before it, and heal at once if you get a turn.

Phase 3: Divine Proclamation. At 20% (50,000 HP) he starts a countdown from nine that ticks down each time he uses a skill; when it ends, Meteor wipes the party (IGN; RPG Site). Slow helps. GameRant says he now absorbs Dark and is weak to Light plus any weakness you added, so Fina's Holy hits hard. Spend Limit Bursts and Resonances here.

In CGInferno's footage the Divine Proclamation banner appears with the party of Rain, Lasswell, Nichol and Fina still standing, and the fight ends about two minutes later. More strategy for every boss is on Bosses.

The reward: the Sephiroth Vision

After the win the crystal says Sephiroth "most certainly" knows your strength now, and the Sephiroth Vision is yours, with a Magicite Cryst (RPG Site). He is one of the 26 Visions and needed for Will Crystallized ("Obtain all visions."), held by 0.4% of Steam players on Oct 25, 2026 (Steam). His Resonance, True Octaslash, deals non-elemental physical damage to all enemies (Game8).

Rankings rate him highly but differently: S tier at Game8, A tier at Destructoid, and first at DualShockers, which calls him "the single best Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance" for passives that raise the wearer's core stats. PowerPyx gives him to Rain in its Ultima Weapon party (PowerPyx). See Best Visions.
