Story

Final Fantasy Resonance follows Rain, a young knight of Grandshelt, who sets out with his friend Lasswell and the amnesiac girl Fina to protect the world's Crystals after the armored Veritas of the Dark shatters the Earth Crystal; the tale runs through a prologue and eight chapters and ends with a full resolution, not a cliffhanger.

Final Fantasy Resonance is "a tale of vengeance and lingering regrets stemming from the mystery around the crystal that keep the world in balance", in producer Keisuke Nakashima's words: Rain, a young knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt, loses his squadron and the Earth Crystal to an armored knight and sets out with his friend Lasswell and the girl Fina to save the Crystals that remain. It retells the first season of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius with a rewritten script by that game's writer, Yukinori Kitajima (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026), so no knowledge of the original is needed (Brave Exvius Connection). The first sections below are free of spoilers; a marked section after them covers what reviews and guides reveal about the later chapters.

The prologue: a war and a lone girl

The game opens far from Grandshelt, on a burning battlefield: "There, upon the battlefield of smoldering ashes, a lone girl descends...", the narration says, and a hooded young woman named only "???" fights her way through soldiers and monsters. The Outerhaven describes this opening as an Archwitch in a chaotic war (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026). The prologue doubles as the tutorial and ends with a fight against an Iron Giant that closes when Bahamut uses Megaflare (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026).

At its end she stands before an armored figure, who tells her "Seal me if you wish. See if I care", and the narration closes the scene: "And with this, this ever-enduring war comes to an end." RPG Site's interview calls the opening cutscene "the armored man versus the mysterious mage" (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026). The game does not name them here, and moves on to Grandshelt.

The premise

In Grandshelt, the Kingdom of Knights, the King tells Rain that the magic barrier around the Earth Shrine has weakened; the shrine houses the Earth Crystal, which the kingdom has guarded for generations. Rain, commander of the airship squadron, goes to investigate with his childhood friend and deputy Lasswell, and there they meet the armored Veritas of the Dark, who beats them and shatters the Earth Crystal (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).

The cost shows at once: a soldier among the flames tells Rain "Forgive us... We couldn't save the ship...", and Rain answers "Damn it..." The armored knight wiped out Rain's airship squadron (Worthplaying, Oct 20, 2026). Veritas then attacks Grandshelt itself; Rain and Lasswell save the King but lose again, and set out to protect the remaining Crystals with Fina, a girl who emerged from the Earth Crystal remembering only her name (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).

The heart of the story is personal. On the way home Rain says of his father, "He'd always be off gallivanting across the realm, saying he had to look into something", and Lasswell remembers that "when my parents died, Sir Raegen raised me like his own son". Rain's father Raegen vanished, and Rain has complicated feelings about him (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026); Pocket Tactics reads the themes as Rain overshadowed by his father and Lasswell torn between what is lawful and what is right (Pocket Tactics, Oct 20, 2026).

In the Town of Mitra the two meet the "Will of Light", which tells them "the scales of balance are tipping" and that in the Farplane "the thoughts of warriors from a myriad of worlds converge"; it gives them the first Vision Crystals. This is how heroes of earlier Final Fantasy games enter the story: as Visions, crystallized essences of characters that fight beside the party (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).

The eight chapters

Square Enix's Announce Trailer sets the stakes: "A mysterious warrior driven by revenge and shrouded in darkness seeks to shatter the eight crystals that sustain this world. As a knight of the realm, you set out on a journey to protect the crystals." Most chapters take the party to a new land and the Crystal it guards. Chapter titles come from RPG Site's walkthrough; the clear achievements carry other names (Achievements and Trophies).

In outline, without spoilers: Chapter 1 follows Veritas from the Earth Shrine to Grandshelt and ends at Siren's Tower and the port of Grandport. Chapter 2 crosses to Dirnado, where the airship engineer Lid joins and the party races the Veritas of the Heavens to the Wind Shrine. Chapter 3 crash-lands in the water nation of Olderion, home of Nichol's clan, the Wardens of the Waters. Chapter 4 joins Jake's rebel army against the Zoldaad Empire, which holds the Fire Crystal. Chapter 5 begins with the airship and the search for Mysidia, the city of mages said to hold the Ice Crystal. Chapters 6 to 8 move through Gronoa to the Crystal Tower and the end (Walkthrough). Each party member also has a substory side quest that deepens their past, several of them new to Resonance (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026).

Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show trailer frames the plot as a question: "What will the Crystals hold? Memories of vengeance, etched into armor? Or memories of bonds long forgotten?" Japanese coverage summed it up the same way, a story of revenge and bonds tied to the Crystals (4Gamer, Sep 17, 2026).

How the story is told

The main scenario is fully voiced in English and Japanese, and so are most side conversations; "Active Time Chats" play between party members while traveling (Nintendo Everything, Oct 20, 2026). All dialogue was revised from Brave Exvius, the order of events was rearranged in places and every side quest is new (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026). An NPC at town entrances offers a recap of the plot so far (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026). Legacy heroes speak Japanese only in their Resonance cinematics (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026).

Critics split on the writing. IGN's Michael Higham found the foundations "quite solid and consistent as a classic Final Fantasy about the power of crystals", with villains who prove "more complicated by story's end", but long stretches of storytelling "quite underwhelming", with dialogue that "feels like it was written for a middling young adult novel". GameSpot's review is titled "Final Fantasy Resonance Saves A Great Story From Live-Service Oblivion" (GameSpot, Oct 20, 2026), and Shacknews found the Sworn Six's motive "not purely evil", with a theme of honor throughout (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026). RPG Site felt the story loses momentum in its final third (RPG Site, Oct 20, 2026), and Kotaku was mixed to negative on the story and cast (Kotaku, Oct 20, 2026). Nintendo Life's round-up named a predictable story among the common criticisms (Reviews and Reception).

Spoilers: what reviews and guides reveal

Spoilers for Chapters 1 to 8 follow.

  • Who the armored knight is. PSU names the armored man at the Earth Shrine as Umbra, leader of the Sworn Six; Square Enix's own materials call him only the Veritas of the Dark (PSU, Oct 20, 2026). RPG Site's walkthrough lists the Chapter 1 fight against Umbra as a scripted loss.
  • The Veritas. The Sworn Six are six armored villains: of the Dark, the Heavens, the Waters, the Flame, the Earth and the Light. The Outerhaven names the Veritas of the Heavens Aether, the Chapter 2 boss at the Wind Shrine (The Outerhaven, Sep 3, 2026). GamingTrend describes "board-room" meetings of the six and much of the plot told in flashbacks (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026); PSU says their motives stay a mystery for most of the game, with hints that what the heroes believe about the world is false.
  • Fina's past. Fina's history connects to the Sworn Six (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026). She has a second form, Archwitch Fina, who appears briefly in Chapter 3 and becomes a separate, eighth party member in Chapter 5 (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026; Game8, Oct 24, 2026).
  • The woman with Bahamut. A woman listed only as "??????" carries deep enmity toward Veritas and travels with Bahamut (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). Square Enix has not published her name, and neither has any source this viki uses, as of Oct 25, 2026.
  • Gilgamesh. The wandering swordsman crosses the party's path several times, ending in a fight on a big bridge (RPG Site, Aug 24, 2026); see Gilgamesh.
  • Chapter 7. RPG Site's walkthrough lists a rematch with Aether and a fight with Umbra, weak to Light, who drops the Demon's Ring (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026).
  • The ending. The final fight is in the Crystal Tower and comes in two parts, the second with several phases; the Upper Reach portal there is the point of no return (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026). Shacknews says the final few hours take a "drastic turn out of nowhere", and Worthplaying that the final boss appears abruptly but the story ends with a full resolution, not a cliffhanger. After the credits a clear save returns you to just before the final boss (Game8, Oct 24, 2026).

The final boss's identity and the personal names of most of the Sworn Six appear in no source this viki uses, so they are not given here. Square Enix covered only Brave Exvius's first season and is not making a second (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026).
