Characters
Final Fantasy Resonance has eight party members: Rain (Sentinel), Lasswell (Breaker), Fina (Medic), Lid, Jake and Sakura (Commandos), Nichol (Synergist) and Archwitch Fina (Saboteur). All join through the story between the start and Chapter 5, four fight at a time, and every one is voiced in English and Japanese.
Final Fantasy Resonance has eight playable party members, each fixed to one of six combat roles: Rain is the Sentinel, Lasswell the Breaker, Fina the Medic, Lid, Jake and Sakura the Commandos, Nichol the Synergist, and an eighth character, kept as a spoiler, the Saboteur. IGN's combat guide walks through them in that order: Sentinels "lead in defense and protect allies", Medics heal, Commandos deal damage, Synergists buff, Breakers "target enemy weaknesses and manipulate the stagger gauge", and Saboteurs debuff. All eight join through the main story, so none can be missed (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026), and every one comes from the first season of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (Brave Exvius Connection). Four fight at once; the rest level up with them but get nothing else from the bench (Shacknews, Oct 20, 2026).

The role is permanent, but a Vision of another role changes what a character can do: a Commando carrying a Medic Vision becomes a damage-dealing healer (PSU, Oct 20, 2026). The main story and most side conversations are fully voiced, with "Active Time Chats" playing while you travel (Nintendo Everything, Oct 20, 2026); the legacy heroes' Resonance lines are in Japanese only (Shacknews).

DualShockers ranks the eight, best first: Rain, Lasswell, Nichol, Fina, Sakura, Lid, Archwitch Fina, Jake. Vision picks for each are on Best Visions, whole teams on Best Party and Builds.
The party members
Rain is the hero, a young knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt who commands an airship squadron, with complicated feelings about his vanished father, Raegen. A tank with innate fire attacks, he is built around the Warrior of Light's Multi-Cover.
Lasswell is Rain's deputy and childhood friend, orphaned and raised by Rain's family: a disciplined, katana-wielding Breaker who favors ice and fills stagger gauges fast.
Fina appears from the Earth Crystal with no memory but her name. She heals with white magic, fights with a bow and is the one who summons the party's Espers (Espers).
Lid is a 16-year-old airship engineer from Dirnado and a contender to be the next Cid, fighting beside Mechabo, the mechanical chocobo she built, which grows through its own quest line.
Nichol is a strategist of the Olderion Federation, heir to the Wardens of the Waters, the fastest character, and the party's buffer with his Formations.
Jake leads the rebel army in the Zoldaad Empire, a gunner who seems carefree and fights on luck, with the highest Strength in the party.
Sakura is a sage of Mysidia who looks young but may be very old, the strongest mage, with the highest Magic.
IGN's review sums up the cast as the knights of Grandshelt, Rain and Lasswell, and "the mysterious magical girl born from a crystal, Fina", "joined by several friends along the way on a quest to stop the armor-clad Sworn Six from destroying the world's crystals". Later in the review it calls Nichol and Sakura "the better-written characters". The whole plot is on Story.
Dialogue choices and substories
At set points a party member asks you a question, and unlike the quizzes at Visions' Sanctums of Light, IGN notes, your answer gives that character a permanent stat bonus; the first comes outside the Earth Shrine. The choice cannot be changed except by reloading (Game8). Each character also has a substory, marked by a blue "!" on the map, that grants a bigger permanent bonus and an accessory (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026):
| Character | Dialogue choice (where) | Options | Substory (opens) | Substory reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rain | Earth Shrine | Strength, Stamina or Spirit +3 | A New Leaf (Chapter 8) | Knight's Medallion |
| Lasswell | Rebel Hideout | MP +10, Strength or Speed +3 | The Twin Titleholders (Chapter 7) | Crest of Criticality |
| Fina | Siren's Tower | MP +10, Stamina or Spirit +3 | Shimmering Reflections (Chapter 6) | Blessed Pendant |
| Lid | Dilmagia Shipyard | Strength, Magic or Stamina +3 | Beyond the Blue (Chapter 5) | Chocobo Nitro |
| Nichol | Aquapolis | HP +30, Magic or Speed +3 | Nichol's Duty (Chapter 5) | Enchanted Ring |
| Jake | Zoldaad Castle | HP +30, Strength or Stamina +3 | Token Legacy (Chapter 6) | Trick Coin |
| Sakura | Village of Sunioo | MP +10, Magic or Spirit +3 | Mysidia, Ever Blooming (Chapter 6) | Amulet of Magic Absorption |
| Archwitch Fina | Research Center Ruins | MP +10, Magic or Spirit +3 | Last Respite (Chapter 5) | Moonlight Ring |
Sources: dialogue choices from GameRant, Oct 23, 2026; substory chapters from PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026; rewards from RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026. Each substory also gives about HP +100, MP +30 and +20 to +30 in two stats. Each character's ultimate weapon is forged by Aileen (Crafting and Adamantite).
Archwitch Fina
Spoilers for Chapters 3 and 5 follow.
The eighth party member is Archwitch Fina, a second form of Fina who becomes a separate character: a Saboteur who debuffs enemies with Dark magic, joining for a while in Chapter 3 and for good in Chapter 5 after the events in the Arcane Library (Game8). She has the highest MP in the party, Dark Limit Bursts (Chaotic Convergence, Fel Meteor, Abyss Graviton) and her own substory, "Last Respite". Her builds and story are on Fina.
Other key characters
- The Veritas, the Sworn Six: six armored villains named for the elements. The Veritas of the Dark (Ian Sinclair, Akio Otsuka) destroys the Earth Crystal and attacks Grandshelt in Chapter 1.
- A woman Square Enix names only "??????" (Corey Pettit, Inori Minase): bound by "a deep enmity" to the Veritas of the Dark, she travels with Bahamut, uses offensive magic and teases Rain (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).
- Raegen, Rain's father, who left his family and disappeared.
- Verun, of the Dwarven Forge in Dirnado, who starts and finishes Lid's Mechabo quests (PowerPyx).
- Evan, who flies the airship and takes you to Bahamut in Chapter 7 (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026; Chocobo and Airship).
- Dr. Lazarov, Zoldaad's scientist and a Chapter 4 boss, whom IGN's review calls an annoying mad scientist (Game8, updated Oct 24, 2026).
- Gilgamesh, who keeps turning up in the story and steals the Genji Gloves, and Sephiroth, an optional fight that earns him as a Vision.
- The Visions, 26 in all: heroes of earlier Final Fantasy games from Cloud and Terra to Clive, and others such as Tronn, Leah, Aileen and Ayaka; they fight through your party members rather than as members themselves (Visions).
