World of Lapis

Final Fantasy Resonance is set on Lapis, a world of Crystals whose regions open one per chapter: the Kingdom of Grandshelt, Dirnado the Continent of Wind, the Olderion Federation, the Zoldaad Empire, Mysidia, Gronoa and the Kingdom of Pharm, crossed on foot, by chocobo, boat, train and from Chapter 5 by airship.

Final Fantasy Resonance takes place on Lapis, a world held in balance by elemental Crystals, and the party crosses it on a classic overworld map: grassy roads, red canyons, dark dungeons and ship decks follow one another in Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show trailer. Lapis is "beset by evildoers" and at the "edge of annihilation" (TheSixthAxis, Jun 9, 2026), and its villains are the Sworn Six of Paladia (Pocket Tactics, Oct 20, 2026), whose armored Veritas of the Dark aims to destroy every Crystal (RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026). The world, its kingdoms and its heroes come from the first season of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (Brave Exvius Connection), but the world map itself is new: producer Keisuke Nakashima called it "essential" for a console game and added it despite technical obstacles (Automaton, Jun 10, 2026). The story that moves across it is on Story.

The regions and when they open

Each chapter moves the party to a new land, so the map opens region by region, and each land has its own trouble: IGN's review notes that the story leans on "the societal issues of each region: environmental tragedies, revolt against tyrannical government, and underclasses being exploited". The table follows RPG Site's walkthrough and PowerPyx's location guides; the Crystal named for each land is the one Square Enix's reveals and reviews place there.

Region Opens Main town Crystal and shrine Places named in guides

"Every step of the journey unfolds in stunning HD-2D. Explore exotic locations", Square Enix's Pixel Trailer says, running through the kinds of places the regions hold: a lamp-lit train station, the deck of a ship at sea, a sailing ship moored at a stone quay, a mountain path past blue crystals, a field of lava, a city of tall stone buildings and a cavern lit blue by water. All of it is HD-2D: pixel-art characters in 3D scenes built from scratch for Resonance (RPG Site, Sep 6, 2026).

Kingdom of Grandshelt

Right after the prologue the words "The Kingdom of Grandshelt" appear over a castle courtyard with a fountain and a horseman's statue, and the King of Grandshelt tells Rain that the magic barrier around the Earth Shrine has weakened; the shrine "houses the Earth Crystal", a heritage the kingdom has guarded for generations. Grandshelt is "the Kingdom of Knights", its people protected by the Crystal's power (Anime News Network, Jul 17, 2026; RPG Site, Jun 13, 2026).

Chapter 1 stays in Grandshelt, the stretch the free demo covers: the Earth Shrine, the Town of Mitra (where the first two Visions join), Grandshelt's castle, the port of Grandport, the Village of Kol (where the chocobo comes), Felicitas, the Kolobos Ruins and Siren's Tower (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026). Oblivion Palace, southeast of Grandport, is reachable from Chapter 1; its "Enigmatic Princess" trades rewards for the 99 Tablet Shards hidden around the world (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). Grandshelt's Colosseum opens in Chapter 4.

Dirnado, the Continent of Wind

The change of scene is sharp: Nintendo Life's review notes that Chapter 1 "is set on a traditional medieval styled island while chapter two is set in a more modern locale with neon lights and steam-powered machines". Dirnado's city is Dilmagia, the Machinopolis: a steel-forged city where airships were born, home of the first Cid, so that "Cid" is now a title for each era's finest engineer (RPG Site, Jul 17, 2026). Lid, an airship engineer who hopes to be the next Cid, joins at the Dilmagia shipyard (Game8, Oct 23, 2026). Chapter 2 climbs Mt. Thunderclap, where the Esper Ramuh waits at the peak, passes the Dwarven Forge and the Mobliz Shipyard, and ends at the Wind Shrine (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026).

Olderion Federation

Olderion, the Aquapolis, is the capital of the Olderion Federation, once a shipbuilding and naval hub, guarded by the clan of the Wardens of the Waters and protected by the Maiden of Water and an Esper that locals call the God of Water (RPG Site, Jul 17, 2026). The party crash-lands in the Federation at the start of Chapter 3, and Nichol, next in line to be Warden of the Waters, joins at the Cave of Waters (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026; Game8, Oct 22, 2026). The Water Shrine's puzzles raise and lower water levels and push boxes to make bridges; the Ruby Cave holds Carbuncle, won with a riddle instead of a fight.

Zoldaad Empire Territory

The Zoldaad Empire is a militaristic nation holding the Fire Crystal, rumored to be planning invasions with mass-produced airships and magitek weapons; its oppression has raised a rebel army (RPG Site, Aug 24, 2026). Chapter 4 begins at Mozul Station and runs along the Timber Tracks to the Imperial Capital, the Rebel Hideout where Jake joins, a Weapons Factory over lava, and Zoldaad Castle (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026). Game8 notes that every Zoldaad location must be visited once to unlock fast travel there, and the southern desert is where Cactuars give 220 MRP each (EXP, Gil and MRP Farming).

Mysidia, the Uncharted Land

"Explore fantastic lands", the Announce Trailer's narrator says as it turns from a desert path to a party on a snowfield and then to a crystal of ice rising from a dark sea; the same trailer speaks of "the eight crystals that sustain this world". Mysidia, the Magiapolis, is the legendary city of mages that some believe fell to ruin, said to hold the Ice Crystal (RPG Site, Aug 24, 2026). It is not on any road: GameSpot's directions are to fly far south, between the Kingdom of Pharm and two small islands, and ping the airship's radar (GameSpot, Oct 22, 2026). Sakura, the Mysidian sage, joins in Chapter 5, and the Esper Shiva waits in a snowstorm on Mysidia's smaller western island (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026).

Gronoa, the Shuttered Land and the late game

Chapter 6 opens Gronoa, where the story asks the party to learn Holy and clear a miasma; Odin is fought at the Bladerain Stele northeast of Duggle (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). After that the map is open: Chapter 7 visits the Town of Sian and Mt. Reizan, and Chapter 8 ends in the Crystal Tower (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026). Optional places reached by air include the Chamber of Arms on the mountain island between Dirnado and Gronoa, Whirlpool Hollow where Sephiroth waits, Dragon's Maw and Ardra Crater, home of the Ultima Weapon (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). The Cave Masters guard caverns on every continent.

Getting around

The Steam store lists airships, crystals, espers and moogles among the series hallmarks that return (Steam, read Oct 25, 2026), and travel grows chapter by chapter, a world reviewers describe as medieval with guns and airships (GamingTrend, Oct 20, 2026):

  • On foot, with a sprint and random encounters; the minimap's radar turns from green to yellow to red as a fight nears (Inven Global, Sep 3, 2026).
  • Chocobo, from the Village of Kol in Chapter 1 (Game8: sleep at the Kol inn to unlock them) (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026).
  • Boat and train carry the party between the elemental continents during the story (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026).
  • Airship, which arrives right after the last boss of Chapter 4 and opens the world at the start of Chapter 5, reaching dungeons and foes only reachable by air (RPG Site, Oct 22, 2026; PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026). Details are on Chocobo and Airship.
  • Fast travel to places already visited (The Outerhaven, Oct 20, 2026). GamingTrend notes that the world map cannot be zoomed.

The Tokyo Game Show trailer shows a great airship of masts and lit windows sailing through purple storm clouds. Producer Keisuke Nakashima, whose first Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy 5, wanted airship exploration of the overworld back (Gamereactor, Jun 16, 2026). After the story ends the whole map stays open for free roaming; there is no New Game Plus (PowerPyx, Oct 21, 2026).
